Class Period
The class period is the date range used in a class definition to identify relevant purchases, account activity, employment, or other events. It helps establish who may be included in a class action or settlement, but the dates are only one part of the eligibility requirements.
Claim helps you compare possible matches and keep track of important dates. Review each page's current status and eligibility details before deciding what to do next.
For example, a hypothetical settlement might cover people who bought a specified product during a two-year period. Buying within those dates would satisfy the timing condition, but the class definition could also limit coverage by location, product size, or seller. A matching date alone would not establish eligibility.
Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 23 requires a certification order to define the class. A complaint may propose a date range that changes as the case develops. For a settlement, use the current court-approved class definition and governing documents rather than assuming the dates in an early news report still apply.
The class period is different from the claim deadline. The period concerns when the relevant activity happened, while the deadline concerns when a required claim must be submitted. A settlement may therefore cover purchases made years ago while accepting claims during a much shorter, later window.
The activity that matters also varies. One case may focus on purchase dates, another on employment dates, and another on accounts or information affected by a particular event. In a securities settlement, ownership during the period alone may be insufficient if the definition requires a qualifying purchase or acquisition.
When reviewing a possible match, check the full definition, any exclusions, and the benefit requirements together. Records such as receipts, account statements, or employment records may help establish the relevant dates when proof is required. Being included in the class does not by itself establish a particular payment amount.
